Biography

Biography

Patsy Whiting was born in Bolton and studied in Loughborough and Manchester. After a period of working as an artist, whilst bringing up a family, she began a career in teaching art. This eventually led, through specialist training, to an Educational Audiology post in Bolton Sensory Service, teaching deaf children aged 3-18.

Patsy continued to produce art throughout her career in deaf education, working in a variety of media, including print, sculpture and painting. During the course of her teaching she developed skills in visual presentation and digital animation which became her key expressive medium. However, a visit to the Picasso museum in Paris inspired her to begin drawing again in earnest and to leave teaching. She now has a studio in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

Artist's statement

Still lives and figures are drawn on a roughly textured pastel ground. The image is built up gradually in layers from detailed photographs, focussing on a small area at a time. It is the play of light which fascinates and challenges me. I love the process of taking away the black to make a form appear out of the shadow.

“Demoiselles after Picasso”2007 by Patsy Whiting

“Demoiselles after Picasso”is a photograph of a nine piece hand printed relief print.

Origins

The inspiration for this work was Picasso's “Demoiselles D'Avignon”.
The initial pencil sketches were based on the three figures to the left in Picasso's painting but their positions were rearranged and more elaborate drapery used on the tallest figure.

Developing the form

Each figure was divided into three sections, head and shoulders, body and thighs and lower legs.
Nine A2 preparatory drawings were made for the print blocks.

Printing

Relief printing blocks were cut from board, the images transferred and the relief created with PVA glue using a palette knife.
Tonal variation was created by wiping off parts of the inked surface. As a result of the hand processing, the proofs differ somewhat. The work was printed using black linseed oil ink on Japanese Hosho paper.

Presentation of the work

The medium of print was chosen for the nature of the marks that are made on the paper. The original intention was to collage the nine prints together in a single composition however this idea changed and the individual identity of each print has been maintained. Each print measures 45cm x 58cm.

The space between the prints makes the women appear as they might through the panes of a window. The size of the framed image is 170cm x 210cm.
