Born in 1921 in South Africa, Denis Bowen was educated in England, studying at Huddersfield School of Art and following war service in the Royal Navy, at the Royal College of Art. Bowen became one of the chief proponents of Tachist abstract art both in his own painting and in his commitment to introducing a huge array of artists though the New Vision Centre Gallery that he founded in 1956. Bowen taught at many art schools including the Royal College of Art. His work has been exhibited widely throughout his career and is held in numerous public collections at home and abroad, including the TATE, the V&A, the British Museum and the National Galleries of Israel, Italy, Poland and Macedonia.Throughout his career Denis Bowen retained a commitment to the spirit of experimental art.
